Local Treasures!

Diane and I snuck away for the weekend to celebrate 35 years together. Nothing fancy... just a couple of hours south to San Diego. We had a wonderful weekend few days of rest and relaxation that included 2 plays, live music (Santana tribut band), walks on the beach and warm jacuzzi's.

We were both very surprised to discover Balboa Park. We've live in Southern California all of our lives and neither of us knew how great it is. It is not only beautiful park grounds. It has 3 theaters with an excellent productions (including a yearly Shakespeare Festival). It has many museums, including Air and Space, Natural History, San Diego Art Museum, and others. It is so nicely laid out it is a wonderful destination. 2 days there did not do it justice and there is much to go back for. We spent our time in the Art Museum, at the plays and enjoying the street performers and beautiful gardens.

Discovering such and unexpected treasure makes me wonder how many more there are out there.

What do you consider to be the local treasures in your area?

Mark

local treasures

I love Balboa Park and am glad I lived in San Diego and was able to go there on a regular basis to enjoy the park as it's big and has so much to see/do/partake in. Point Loma is a beautiful seaside community and worth seeing if in SD and the lighthouse at PL and Cabrillo National Monument. Ocean Beach Dog Beach is the best if you want to take your dog along to have fun as well as the humans.

Here in LA County I love Griffith Park Observatory, Griffith Park, and the Los Feliz neighborhood.

When I lived in SF I lived a block away from Golden Gate Park so spent a great deal of time there plus every time I visit I like to go to the Botanical Gardens and the lake area.

Really in all 3 cities there are so many little nooks and crannies that are local treasures for me though these parks appeal to me greatly and probably would to most others as well.

My dogs and i have had lots of fun at Huntington Dog Beach too. it is very nice.,
I love my Mt. Wilson hiking trail in Sierra Madre, i probably would be in a little less lumbar pain if i didn't hike, but i just love getting away and 1 1/2 miles up is an awesome stream.

Another treasure is this forum and all the local people on it.
anyone ready to meet for a drink? or anything, i want to meet everyone:D

All of you that belong to AAA should stop in and get a So.Cal travel guide
it has listings of some wonderful places to go and see, also you can log onto
California's gold with Huell Howser, who travels all around our fine state!

Judy, we frequent Huntington Dog beach all the time. You might recognize Taffy!

I would love to meet for drinks or a romp on the beach. Funny, my first Internet spiney gathering with the Braintalk Spinal Disorders folks was at the Huntington Dog Park, back in 2000!

I'm leaving tomorrow for a quick trip to Germany... Back next Friday. Any time after that will be fine.

Catalina Island..

Like this place as well. Haven't been there in a "dog's age".. re Huell Howser like his program quite a bit.
I also take Lola to Huntington Dog Beach cuz I live far closer now to that than SD/Ocean Beach. Long Beach has a dog beach has part of the beach designated as a dog beach tho Lola doesn't know she isn't supposed to romp any further than the orange cones that block off human from dog beach. HB is much nicer/cooler too usually. Great walking.

Ok Mark
Have a good trip to Germany. My daughter in law to be lives there and i would love to visit if i could find affordable plane fare.
Maria i do love taking the dogs (i have 2 ) to HB too. I am up for a trip.

I would love to get together. Let you pick a date Mark as you are far more busy than i . I just frequent doctor's offices and can always change them.
Maria are you in?

Mark adorable dog, as mine are too, but i don't know how to post pics, i'll ask my daughter to if she is in the mood!!

Maria 04-15-2011 09:01 PM

We're in

Lola is always ready to go to the dog beach esp. HB because she loves waves (LB lacks wave action). So we're in. Perhaps Mark should pick a date when he returns since he actually works! I'm like you Judy re doc appts/offices.

I actually have no doctor appointments this week and only one next week. It is amazing.

my appts.

I just have one appt. this week/dental and one next week/eye. Actually I'm going to try and stay out of doctor's offices for a while. Just need to finish up with this eye business and get my permanent tooth finished (crown/tooth). I need my BMD done and may make an appt. just to get that done and hopefully stay away from doctors for a few months at least (crossing fingers here)!

jsewell 04-19-2011 05:10 AM

Wow you can stay away for a few months. Lucky you between my endocrinology problems and breathing and gastro and hematologist and i could go on i am never free of anyone for too long.
good luck with that Maria.

oops

I have a derm appt. this week that I made and the derm is out of network because I hear he's really good. I want to have him check me out re this shingles stuff as I value someone's opinion who knows skin and could have probably made the right dx straight away no matter how atypical my case. He's close by as well so that's good.

Actually I do have other specialists I'm supposed to see so I probably won't stay out of their offices altogether. I'd like to though.

jsewell 04-20-2011 02:45 AM

Maria can you tell me where that doctor is. I am supposed to see a dermatologist and had one picked out , but he is not practicing currently. I live near Pasadena in Sierra Madre. So now i just start from scratch. I have a bunch of new growths and my primary said to see derm within 6 months. Time is almost up. I have no idea where you live, may be too far away for me.
thanks

Maria lives down south, far, far away, in a land of milk and honey, where the sun still shines and the cooler breezes blow - oops, wrong forum!

I like my dermatologist very much. As a redhead, my skin is quite sensative and because of my sun worshiping years, prone to skin cancers. I've been seeing him for years.

He's in the San Fernando Valley, a little closer - if you're interested -

Thanks DAle
i am also a sunworshiper but with a darker complexion. Just have a bunch of new stuff that appeared.
But the wrong valley. I need the San Gabriel Valley and with this neck brace still on i am driving local and when i know i don't have to change a lane.

I am

Too far away Judy. Long Beach for now. I don't even drive on the freeway anymore! I have some doctors in LB and some in San Diego (my husband lives in SD county). Wish I could be more helpful w/the information you desire.

jsewell 04-21-2011 04:44 AM

That's ok just thought i would ask. I need to call my primary care office they usually have recommendations.
