I have had this exact pain on and off for all of my cervical spine journey (12+ years), both pre- and post-op (CED, laminectomy). In my case, the pain was usually relieved by muscle spasm treatments (TENS, massage, ice, moist heat, and muscle relaxants). I tried four or five muscle relaxants until I finally found one that worked: Flexeril. Others have shared that their particular muscle relaxant is x, y, or z, and that they also tried numerous ones until they found one that worked.

Perhaps your problem is also muscle spasms. Ask someone to slightly push where it hurts. If it feels almost good, but very bruised, there is a strong chance that spasms are your problem too.
