Question about Germany
For those of you who've been: are there phones in the hospital rooms? And do they have wireless internet available in the hospital?

36 year old mom of 7 in SC. MRI 4/2008 shows bulging disc with annular tear @ 4/L5 and and complete herniation at L5/S1. 9/11/08 Laminectomy , successful to a point...relieved nerve pain, but after 4 months was still having severe disc pain. Treatments tried: epidural shots, oral pain killers, NSAID's, TENS massage, chiropractic care, deep tissue massage. Oh, and plenty of our homemade wine!  May 26 2009, 2 level ADR, L4-S1, Dr. Bertagnoli, Straubing, Germany

Good question Jess. I hope there are phones.
I found out it would cost $1.25/min for any call to/from my cell phone while in Germany. I will be instructing my family and friends, not to call me while I am in Germany, they can email me. I will probably make one phone call home, after surgery (or I should say my boyfriend will be making a call) to let my Mom know how I am doing. I will rely on her to call everyone else. But then I will use email to send out more detailed information later. But I was hoping there would be a phone in the room, so my boyfriend and I could use that and the phone at the hotel to call each other.

You can get international calling cards to use over there, and it is only 2 to 3 cents/minute. I'm not sure if you can use them on your cell phones, but it will work on a land line for sure. Maybe check with the cell phone company to see if they will accept them for that.

Recently discovered that I am severely allergic to all common metals used in surgical hardware except for Titanium.

The price for using the phones in the hospital rooms is very reasonable.
If you have an unlocked cell phone, the cheapest way I've found to communicate with an eplus prepaid SIM card... .15 to connect to US, then .09 Euro cents/minute. .25/.15 for inside Europe. Incoming calls are free, but have a premium charge to caller (additional fee, something like .20/minute) as do most European cell phones. Wireless internet free at St. Elisabeth (I'm not sure if it's ready for public, but technically it's been working for a year.) T-Mobile hotspots (paid WLAN access) in cafeterias at both hospitals. Wired internet great at Bogen, costs 5 Euro/day. I have cell phones you can borrow if we meet up, but I may leave earlier now due to schedule changes.
