Default Library - "The Pain Chronicles" by Melanie Thernstrom

I just received this book about chronic pain from a client. She sees the world of chronic pain from both sides. She deals with chronic pain patients in her practice and is a failed spine patient herself. Her recommendation carries a lot of weight with me.

I'll be adding this book to the lending library as soon as I've finished it. I'm posting info about it here, just in case someone else here knows it and cares to comment.

The amazon page for the book is here:

Amazon.com: The Pain Chronicles: Cures, Myths, Mysteries, Prayers, Diaries, Brain Scans, Healing, and the Science of Suffering eBook: Melanie Thernstrom: Kindle Store

I'll post more as I'm reading. I think this will be a great addition to the lending library.

All the best,

Mark

Much of the discussion about chronic pain patients, failed back surgery, etc... surrounds the idea that we develop a 'chronic pain disorder' that becomes a separate problem. Bertagnoli calls it the 'chronification' of pain.

Articulated in this book, "It is not the duration of pain that characterizes chronic pain, but the inability of the body to restore normal functioning."

More later...

Mark

PS... note that the link I posted above was to the Kindle version. Here is the hardcover: Amazon.com: The Pain Chronicles: Cures, Myths, Mysteries, Prayers, Diaries, Brain Scans, Healing, and the Science of Suffering (9780865476813): Melanie Thernstrom: Books
