Default depends

on what surgery you're getting though most of the spine forums I've seen if it's discectomy and/or fusions there are usually repeat surgeries. Some artificial disc surgeries have lasted a long time without other surgeries but it's something one really doesn't know and cannot be sure of.

I've had 2 lumbar discectomies and then was advised to have a 3rd lumbar surgery which I decided not to get because I felt I could deal with what I had and didn't want to go thru the unknown again. Besides my other two surgeries failed.

I think it depends on what's going on with you personally and how you're functioning in terms of whether you want to have surgery or not however one has to keep a realistic perspective when it comes to spine surgery.

mmglobal (Mark) is an excellent resource person to talk to about spine surgeries.

Good luck whatever you'll be doing. Maria

I've seen some pretty amazing recoveries from very big and complex surgeries that should have a relatively low success rate. I've also seen bad outcomes from easy, minimally invasive surgeries. Outcomes are all over the place.

Spine surgery should be avoided if possible.. there is no magic bullet. However, for many off us, there are no other options.

Default Spine surgery

Spine surgery will often partly or fully relieve symptoms of your pain. However, people who had bad and long term back pain before their surgery are still likely to have some pain afterward. Spinal fusion will not take all of the pain away and other symptoms.
